Project7 - Dyed Wooden Chest of Drawers

  1. Rub item down to bare wood and clean thoroughly. Ensure all previous surface coatings have been removed. Wipe with white spirit to remove any dust, dirt or grease and allow to dry thoroughly.
  2. Wearing rubber gloves, make up separate base solutions of Yellow, Turquoise and Orange and Red Pure Colour Dye by dissolving 1 level small spoon of dye (1.25g) in 500ml of hot tap water, stirring well.
  3. Apply dye evenly using a brush, sponge or cloth, working in the direction of the grain.
  1. The effect on the wooden chest (opposite) was achieved by dyeing as follows:
Drawer Carcass - pour some Yellow dye solution into a separate container, then gradually add Turquoise dye solution to achieve the 'lime green' of your choice. Paint the whole carcass. Add a little more of the Turquoise to the existing solution to achieve a bluer green. For the ombre effect - overpaint the original 'lime green' while still wet to allow the colours to blend.
Top two drawers - paint with a Yellow base colour, then dd a little Orange and overpaint as above.
Middle two drawers - mix a solution of 50% Yellow and 50% Orange base colours, then overpaint with Orange while still wet to allow colours to blend.
Bottom two drawers - paint with Orange base colour, then overpaint with a 50% Orange and 50% Red mixture.
  2. Allow to dry thoroughly. Apply any clear wood varnish to seal the colour.
