Project6 - Tie-Dyed Sarong

  1. Pre-wash a 200cm x 60cm piece of lightweight 100% cotton muslin fabric, leave damp.
  2. Make narrow concertina pleats in the fabric; fold in half, tie elestic bands tightly at intervals along the length.
  3. Dissolve each chosen dye colour with fix and salt in warm water in a squeezy bottle with a nozle, (a clean washing-up liquid bottle is ideal). Use 1 level small spoon of Pure Colour Dye powder (1.25g); 1 heaped small spoon of Fix (3.75g); 1 heaped big spoon of salt (10g), mix in 200ml of warm water.
  1. Place the damp tied fabric in a tray to prevent dye spillage. Squeeze dye from nozzle directly into the fabric, using a different colour in each tied section, overlapping a little to produce combination colours.
  2. Ensure the dye is squeezed into the folds.
If necessary turn the tied item over and squeeze more dye into the folds, using the colours corresponding to the first application.
  3. Place the whole tray in a polythene bag, tie to make it airtight and leave overnight.
  4. Rinse thoroughly in cold water, then untie, open out and wash with hot water and detergent. It is advisable to wash items separately for the first two or three times.
