Project4 - Dyed and Painted Wallhanging and Pillowcase

  1. Weigh 100% cotton fabric to determine quantities of dye, fix and salt required.
  2. Pre-wash fabric and pillowcase, leave damp. Follow instructions for dyeing in the washing machine, as detailed in the pack - dyeing to a 'light' shade of your chosen colour.  Allow to dry and then iron.
  3. Tape fabric onto a plastic covered board or work surface (if painting a pillowcase or cushion cover, place a plastic covered board inside to prevent the paint seeping through to the back of the item).
  4. Use masking tape to mark out a series of squares or oblongs as a guideline for painting slightly irregular shapes.
  5. Follow instructions in the pack for mixing Pure Colour Dye with Dye Thickener for painting. The colours used for the wallhanging and the pillow case were Magenta, Scarlet, Blue and Turquoise.
  1. Mix the thickened dyes (in a palette or several small containers) in varying proportions to produce a number of complementary colours. Use a brush to paint irregular shapes within the masked off areas.
  2. Leave overnight to dry. Rinse thoroughly in cold water, wash at 30°C with detergent, preferably in a washing machine.

Wallhanging - use polyester wadding as a backing, hand stitch around each shape to give a quilted effect. Stitch both side hems and then the top and bottom hems, making these deep enough to insert wooden battens for hanging. If you are using unfinished wood such as pine, you can use Pure Colour Dye to paint it a complementary colour to the fabric; just follow the instructions for 'Wood Dyeing' in Project 7. Allow the batten to dry thoroughly and varnish before inserting into the channels made by the top and bottom hems.
