Project3 - Tablecloth and Napkins

Plain Dyed Tablecloth and Napkins
  1. Weigh fabric to determine quantities of dye, fix and salt required.
  2. Pre-wash 100% cotton tablecloth and napkins, leave damp.
  3. Follow instructions for dyeing in the washing machine, as detailed in the pack.
  4. The colour shown was achieved by using the proportions shown for a 'light' shade of Turquoise, dyeing 500g dry weight of fabric in the machine:
2 level small spoons of Turquoise dye (2.5g)
2 heaped small spoons of Fix. (7.5g)
    8 tablespoons of salt (250g)
Ombre-Dyed Napkins
  1. Use the dyed napkins from the project above, dampen them.
  2. Dissolve 1 heaped big spoon of Turquoise dye powder in 500ml of hot water. Dissolve 1 heaped big spoon of Blue dye powder in another 500ml of hot water. Dissolve 1 heaped big spoon of Fix in another 500ml of hot water.
  3. Mix 190ml of Turquoise solution and 60ml of Blue solution together.
  4. Add 125g of salt to cold water in a dye container; add the mixed solution of Turquoise and Blue from the recipe above, and the 500ml of Fix solution.
  5. Dip the napkins approximately half way into the dye bath (hold in place with pegs on the rim of the container). Agitate continuously for 10 minutes, then occasionally for the remaining 50 minutes.
  6. Rinse thoroughly in cold water, then wash with hot water and detergent, dry away from direct heat and sunlight.

Alternatively, you may wish to personalise your napkins using thickened dye as a fabric paint.
