Project2 - Batik Cushion Covers

Spiral Design
  1. Pre-wash and dry 100% cotton fabric, iron, pin onto batik frame ensuring that fabric is taut.
  2. Using a tjanting tool or a small brush, apply wax in small spiral patterns to cover the whole area.
  3. Allow to cool (if a crackle effect is required, remove the fabric from the frame and crush into a ball to crack the wax, then open out and re-pin onto frame.
  4. Follow the instructions for using Pure Colour Dye Thickener with dye powder.  The colours shown are Turquoise, Blue and Yellow.
  5. Paint a circle of the lightest colour in the centre, followed by a slightly overlapping circle of the next colour, (where the two colours intermix, a third colour will be achieved). Continue with the remaining colour(s) to complete the design.
  6. Leave overnight, remove from frame and rinse thoroughly in cold water. Remove wax as detailed in Project 1.
Leaf Design
  1. Use the same technique as the spiral design cushion (above), applying the wax with a tjanting tool or a brush to make leaf shapes all over the fabric.  It is important that each area is enclosed by the wax, otherwise dye will seep into other areas.
  2. Mix colours required following the instructions for using Pure Colour Dye Thickener, paint onto fabric using a brush, mixing the colours in a palette to make additional colours as necessary.
  3. Leave overnight, remove from frame, rinse thoroughly with cold water.
  4. Remove wax as detailed in Project 1.
